How to write a job post that attracts the right people

What to include, what to leave out, and how to describe the result you want.

Start with the result

Professionals decide in seconds whether a job is for them. Open with what you need delivered and why, in one or two sentences, before any detail.

“A five-page website for our bakery in Ikeja, so customers can see the menu and order on WhatsApp” says far more than “Need web developer urgently”.

Describe what “done” looks like

List the deliverables, so everyone agrees on the finish line before work starts.

  • The files or pages you expect, and in what format
  • Anything you will provide: logos, copy, access to accounts
  • How many rounds of changes you expect

Be honest about budget and timing

Give a budget in naira, or a range you are comfortable with, and the date you need the work. Clear numbers attract serious proposals and save everyone time.

If the deadline is flexible, say so. If it is fixed, say why.

Ask one question that shows fit

Ask applicants something specific, such as a similar project they have done or how they would approach yours. Their answers make proposals much easier to compare.
